A level results day 2021!

After a challenging year, today was a day of smiles and celebration across Ashington Academy and Bedlington Academy as our eager NE6 sixth formers collected their much-anticipated A level results.

Many students achieved impressive grades, earning places at prestigious Russell Group universities. Ashington Academy's top performer, Jessica Thomas, will take up a place studying modern and medieval languages at the University of Cambridge after achieving an impressive achieved two A*s in French and Spanish and an A in art.

Other top performers include:

  • Mya Wilson-Smith who was awarded an A* in biology and As in chemistry and maths and who is heading to the University of Sunderland to study medicine.
  • Hollie Newsome who achieved A*s in PE and geography, as well as an A in biology and who is off to study her passion of sport and exercise science at Leeds Beckett University.
  • Lauren BrownSophie Glenton and Georgia Mutton who all got a full sweep of As and are off to Northumbria University to study criminology with forensic science (Lauren), Newcastle University to study biomedical sciences (Sophie) and Royal Holloway in London to study psychology (Georgia).
  • Jack Collins who was awarded an A* in economics and Spanish and a B in history and is headed to Newcastle University to study modern languages.
  • Freya Bell who achieved a B in history, an A in law and an A* in psychology and who goes onto Northumbria University to study law.
  • Braden Gallon who was awarded an A in film, B in history and an A in law and who is heading to Newcastle University to study ancient history and archaeology.
  • Brooke Stacey who achieved an A* in economics and Bs in history and maths and who is beginning an accountancy apprenticeship.
  • Leena Phillips who achieved a B in art, an A in English and a B in psychology and who is heading to Durham University to study psychology.

At Bedlington Academy, Alex Hamilton-Parkes achieved an outstanding set of results with straight A*s across the board in French, maths, further maths and physics, securing a place at Loughborough University, studying Aeronautical Engineering. 

Alex was not the only student to be awarded a sheet full of A*s. Caitlyn Alderson was successful in achieving three of the highest grades in biology, chemistry and geography. She will now go on to study for a Masters in biochemistry at Newcastle University.  

Laura Mason joined top performers after achieving an A* in maths, an A in physics and an A in chemistry. She will now prepare to study medicine at Sunderland University. 

Other top performers at Bedlington Academy include:

  • Erin Bradley who achieved an A* in chemistry, an A* in English and an A in biology and will now go on to study forensic science at Newcastle University.
  • Rachel Jones who was awarded A*, A and B in English literature, chemistry and biology and will head to Newcastle University to study biochemistry.
  • Abbie Thompson who achieved a Distinction* in health and social care, a B in biology and a B in psychology. Abbie will continue her education at Northumbria University. Studying criminology and forensic science.
  • Hannah Doncaster who achieved two fantastic A*s in English literature and film studies in addition to a B in biology. Hannah will now prepare to study law at Newcastle University.
  • Andrew Anderson who gained a Distinction* in engineering, a B in maths and a C in physics, earning a place at Newcastle University to study engineering.

Speaking of her students’ success, Yvonne Weston, Headteacher at Ashington Academy, said:

“It is fantastic to see students celebrating their much-deserved A level results. Our young people have achieved some brilliant grades and I am so proud of the resilience, hard work and dedication that they have shown at such an important yet challenging time for them.

Joanna Lamb, Headteacher at Bedlington Academy, added: 

“This has been a results day like no other. The pandemic has changed the way that this year’s A levels and vocational qualifications were assessed and the students deserve huge credit for their resilience in these circumstances. 

“We are so proud of all our students and what they have achieved, we wish them well in their futures.”
